January Monthly Program: History and Preservation of the Rosenwald Schools
The Senoia Area Historical Society presents our January monthly program on Thursday, January 8th, 2026.
Join us as guest speaker Debron Walker presents the remarkable story of the Rosenwald Schools and the ongoing preservation of the Eleanor Roosevelt School in nearby Warm Springs, Georgia.
About the Program
Born from a historic partnership between educator Booker T. Washington and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, nearly 5,000 of these rural schoolhouses were built between 1912 and 1936. This transformative educational movement served over 700,000 Black children across the South during a pivotal era in American history.
Today, only about 500 of these historic structures remain. Mr. Walker will share the inspiring history of this movement and discuss the critical efforts required to preserve these important landmarks, with a special focus on our local Eleanor Roosevelt School. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about a vital chapter of our regional heritage!
